Each piece of jewelry is passed from specialist to specialist until precious raw materials are transformed into small works of art. Skilled and experienced in the art of shaping, refining and embellishing, Tacori artisans find beauty in every detail, like the light reflecting from a diamond’s facet or the delicate engraving on a platinum band. All of their fine jewelry is handcrafted at their Glendale, California headquarters. There, a fusion of Old World elegance with modern allure results in new American heirlooms.

Once brides discover the exquisite Tacori touch, they expand their vision to include other precious adornments—watches, necklaces, earrings. Hand-crafted by Tacori artisans with sterling silver, genuine stones, natural pearls and Swarovski crystals, Tacori’s Bridal Evening Collection includes coordinated ensembles that can be worn for the wedding day, and beyond.

So you’ve decided. She’s the one.

You’re planning to get down on one knee and ask her the single most important question of your life. Soon you’ll be slipping a ring on the finger of your future wife.

Are you sure her tears are going to be of joy, or will she be sobbing with disappointment?

Even if you’re a die-hard romantic, you’ve got to admit: surprising your girlfriend with an engagement ring, without first doing your research, is a risky thing.

Think of it: if someone bought you something that you’re expected to wear every day and forever – and you hate it – wouldn’t you be miserable?

“We’ve found that seven out of 10 girls don’t like their engagement ring,” says Joseph Abdallah Jr. of Joseph Anthony Fine Jewelry. “They grow to like it, but what we’ve found over the years is that the engagement ring they got doesn’t even fall into their top five.”

Choosing a ring that’s not her style could dampen an otherwise beautiful proposal.

When it comes to selecting and purchasing an engagement ring, that important piece of expensive jewelry your girl will wear for the rest of her life, it’s absolutely imperative that you consider her perspective and pay attention to her everyday style.

“We say to our customers, ‘You know her best’,” says Abdallah. “Even if you don’t know exactly what she wants, think about what kind of girl she is. Is she casual? Is she fashion-forward? If she’s that simple, jeans and a T-shirt kind of girl, a round solitaire is always perfect. If she’s a show-off kind of girl, one who likes to go out and party, she might really love a ring with lots of diamonds surrounding the centre and going down the band.”

Start paying attention to the rings she sighs over.

Does she gasp with glee when she sees sizeable diamonds or does she balk at the idea of a too-large stone on her petite fingers?

Does she often wear silver and white gold, or does her collection mostly include yellow gold?

Does she like simple, classic jewelry, or does she have a penchant for vintage-style, ornate baubles?

All of this investigating might seem like a lot of work, but this is a symbol of your eternal love for her. You’re doing this once, so it’s best to do it right.

Understandably, some men want the element of surprise – they feel that if they choose and buy the ring with their girlfriend present, it takes away from that magic moment. But Abdallah says including the bride-to-be in the engagement ring selection doesn’t have to be anti-climactic.

“There’s another way to do it,” says Abdallah. “We can sell just the loose diamond that he can present to his girlfriend in a box. He can propose with that, and then they come in together and design the setting together.”

No doubt, there’s another important factor that has crossed your mind: Cost.

Luckily, that three-month salary rule has relaxed in recent times. Grooms are unafraid to walk into a jewelry store and admit their budget, no matter how small.

“We have some customers come in and say, ‘This is what I want in a ring, and this is what I can afford’,” says Abdallah, who adds that a 3/4 to 1 CT diamond (the most popular range of sizes), has an average cost of $3,500. Tacori rings, the most sought-after bridal brand, can be purchased for as low as $900.

Now that you’ve decided on the style and your budget, you just have to plan the perfect proposal. The good news is that no matter how you do that, she’s sure to be ecstatic.
