How it all started? Diamond engagement ring tradition.
Diamond engagement rings have become accepted as tokens of love in many corners of the world. Why diamonds as tokens of love? Simply because diamonds are precious and eternal just like the true love is so connecting these two was really a win-win situation. Love has longer history than diamonds do but diamonds are even older than love, in fact much older, being on Earth million of years before humans. Ever since the times human develop an eye for aesthetic diamonds became something special, a gift from above, something that mortal can only admire.
Therefore it is really no surprise that diamonds were so famous throughout the entire human history, in early periods diamonds were believed to have magical power for their bearers (usually kings, since no other man was worthy enough to wear them), in some cases so strong that others were scared of magical powers that diamonds gave to their bearers, after all diamonds were teardrops of Gods, something that gives incredible strength and power, a true divinity in the hands of chosen mortals. It took a lot of years, in fact all the way to 15th century before people unlucky not to be born as kings could wear them.
15th century is also the time when diamond engagement ring tradition started for the first time. In fact this happened in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented a gold ring set with a diamond as a token of his eternal love to his future wife Mary of Burgundy. Though historians usually take this year as the starting point of diamond engagement ring tradition few other things must be accounted as well. For instance ancient Greeks believed that believed that fire in diamond will keep flame of love for eternity, and Egyptians believed that the vein of love ran from the forth finger directly to the heart. As you can see connection between diamonds, rings, and love was established long before Archduke Maximilian.
Diamonds because of their supreme qualities are really the perfect symbols for special things, and love is the most special thing of them all. What really made the difference in the whole diamond engagement rings story was the early Hollywood with its first movie divas that wear diamonds, and made them popular. Diamonds were then for the first connected with exquisite glamour, something reserved for these first big celebrities that were to us like kings were to common people in early diamond history, an out of reach stars.
